Something is eating our birch tree!

It looks like a well orchestrated effort by a multitude of caterpillars... I have never seen them all concentrate on a single leaf like this -- it worries me!!!
In related news, our Venusta Orchard Spider must be eating well because he/she is increasing in size at a pretty alarming rate. I assume there is a maximum size for this spider; hopefully less than 2 inches!
